Online Training - Number of Assistants
Why is the number of assistants higher for online training than for onsite training?
The IANLP curricula call for the following number of assistants:
For groups on-site: Are more than 15 students in attendance, for each 15 additional students, training has to include an additional assistant.
For groups online: Up to 9 students one assistant is mandatory. Are more than 9 students in (online) attendance, for each 9 additional students, training has to include an additional assistant.
.
Why is this so?
The following aspects were contributed by experienced Fellow Member Trainers of the IANLP.
- Technical support: Online platforms use various technologies, and we need assistants to help with any tech issues students and instructors encounter. For example, control elements are arranged differently depending on the user device, or at best they are not found at all.
- Communication challenges: In the online environment, it's harder to gauge students' understanding and address their questions in real-time. Assistants provide personalized attention and facilitate discussions. E.g. chat functions should be supervised by an assistant, as it is very demanding for the presenter to operate them parallel to the presentation.
- Individualized attention: Assistants help students who are struggling and provide extra support.
- Assignment and assessment management: With more assignments and assessments to handle, assistants help with grading and feedback.
- Course organization: Assistants ensure course materials are well-organized and accessible.
- Increased enrollment: Online courses often have more students, so assistants help manage the workload.
- Different learning formats: Assistants support various learning modalities like individual training (coaching) sessions and breakout room activities. This allows the presenter to prepare for the next sequence in the background.

"Learning from mistakes and failure is an essential part of personal growth and development. It is often said that we learn more from our failures than from our successes because mistakes provide us with valuable feedback and insights that we can use to improve our future performance. Professional failures can be unpleasant and demotivating, but they are also an important opportunity for personal and professional growth..."
